FDIC - 2011 Bank Failures in Brief #92
Property, Economics, Government (Independent) -> The Committee to Defend Private Property Rights

U.S. bank failure costs to exceed estimates by $2 billion

The FDIC's 2010 loss estimate for bank failures rose to $24.18 billion at year's end, up from initial estimates of $22.17 billion.

The bank regulator increased the loss estimate for 102 out of 157 banks that failed in 2010, according to SNL Financial.

The list of Bank Failures in Brief is updated through August 05, 2011. Please address questions on this subject to the Customer Service Hotline (Telephone: 1-888-206-4662).

Regulators closed two banks today, bringing the total number of banking failures for the year to 63. The FDIC classifies 888 banks as “Problem Banks”, a number which has risen nonstop since 2006. The number of troubled banks comprise almost 12% of all federally insured institutions. With many analysts forecasting another recession, a further increase in the number of problem banks could become a major problem for the FDIC.

Surprise!  Yes, it was!  The Good News is, we just switched this week when our solvent branch disaffiliated.

Well... I see that my bank is now on the Problem Bank List .

From what I've learned in ECON -101 class, I'm not surprised.

Should I transfer my Capital Homestead Account (CHA) to another bank?

    "Be still my beating heart"

Cousin-Ken you might want to set up a "Citizen Land Bank" first.

"But in today’s troubled world of mounting budget deficits and shrinking private-sector bank loans, how many of you think that these sources will be sufficient for funding all of the city right-sizing, brownfield redevelopment and new community development projects you think should be implemented? Please raise your hands. (no hands went up)

My major purpose in coming before you today is to encourage you to think outside-the-box, beyond the short-term, and in ways that would empower every American with a personal stake in a market-based version of grassroots economic democracy. I want you to consider how we could reinforce in economic terms what our Voting Rights Act of 1965 did in lifting racial barriers to universal participation in today’s political democracy. I want you to think long-term and optimistically about the impact your most creative initiatives could have over the next 100 years for people living in your community, assuming there was enough money to fund your projects.

My hope is to convince enough of you mayors and professionals in this audience to be willing to explore a non-conventional but politically timely approach that would tap into an existing but overlooked source — a “hidden reservoir” — for financing your boldest vision of the future. We call this new approach “Capital Homesteading.” It would create communities where new investment and new private-sector jobs would be created, and where every man, woman and child —no matter how poor — could become a capital owner of growth capital. In this new way, have-nots could become haves without depending on or taking anything away from current haves. As will be explained, this approach would employ 100% leveraged bank financing, which is available today under Federal law for worker-owners." -- Dr. Norm Kurland, Lawyer, economist, a founder of E.S.O.P.'s (Employee Stock Ownership Plans), architect of the future.

In its present form it is referred to as a "Citizen Land Bank".

Will somebody -anybody- tell this IDIOT from Iowa, why we the people -by shareholder vote- don't have Representatives, of, by and for the people, in each Regional Federal Reserve Bank??

A simple answer; we the people haven't adobted a Capital Homesteading Act.

FDIC: Banks Earned $87.5B in 2010, But "Problem List" Grew

    February 23, 2011

The number of institutions on the FDIC’s “Problem List” rose from 860 to 884 (almost 12% out of 7,657 insured institutions). Total assets of “problem” institutions increased to $390 billion from $379 billion in the prior quarter, but are below the $403 billion reported at year-end 2009. “Problem” institutions are those considered at risk of failure.

The Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) balance—the net worth of the fund—rose from negative $8 billion to negative $7.4 billion (unaudited) during the fourth quarter. The increase stemmed primarily from assessment revenues and an improving outlook for losses from future failures. The contingent loss reserve, which covers the costs of expected failures, fell from $21.3 billion to $17.7 billion during the quarter.

S&P Downgrades US Debt – Feds Tell Banks US Securities Still “Riskless”

Earlier today, Standard & Poor’s rating agency lowered the long-term rating of the U.S. government and federal agencies from AAA to AA+. With regard to this action, the federal banking agencies are providing the following guidance to banks, savings associations, credit unions, and bank and savings and loan holding companies (collectively, banking organizations)

For risk-based capital purposes, the risk weights for Treasury securities and other securities issued or guaranteed by the U.S. government, government agencies, and government-sponsored entities will not change. The treatment of Treasury securities and other securities issued or guaranteed by the U.S. government, government agencies, and government-sponsored entities under other federal banking agency regulations, including, for example, the Federal Reserve Board’s Regulation W, will also be unaffected.
